Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Rimless Coin

On October 7, Perth Mint has released the final coin in the popular Gods of Olympus series; Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Rimless Coin. Each Hades coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.9% pure silver. Previous Releases for the Gods of Olympus series: Zeus, Poseidon.

The reverse of the coin depicts Hades sitting on his throne made of bones and skulls wearing his invisibility helmet. He is accompanied by Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog. The design includes the inscription HADES and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. To capture the depth and detail of the design, each coin is meticulously struck in high relief to a rimless format and features an antique finish which gives the coin an aged effect.

Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2014 year-date, and the monetary denomination are shown on the coin’s obverse.

In ancient Greek mythology, Hades was worshipped as the God of the Underworld and the ruler of the dead. Historically, Hades was often depicted sitting on his ebony throne with Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog by his side. He was also known to wear a helmet of invisibility given to him by the Cyclops to help in the battle against the Titans. His name is said to mean ‘invisible’ or ‘unseen’ and the underworld which he ruled over was also called Hades.

Hades was one of six children including two brothers, Zeus and Poseidon, born to Rhea and Cronus, the ruler of the Titans. Having overthrown their father, the three brothers divided the universe between them. Zeus took control of the heavens, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld.

No more than 1,500 of the Gods of Olympus – Hades 2014 2oz Silver High Relief Rimless Coin will be released by The Perth Mint. The coin is housed in a prestigious round wooden display case with stunning detail on its lid, and packaged in a beautifully illustrated shipper.
